Lesson 2 of 10 · 6-minute read

The Context → Goal → Format method

A simple three-part structure for clear requests and much better answers.

Goal

Write an effective prompt in less than a minute, without jargon.

A prompt is simply the instruction you give AI. You do not need magic formulas: write as you would brief a capable colleague who is new to the task.

The three ingredients

  1. Context — Who are you? Who do you work for? What is the situation?
  2. Goal — What exactly do you need? What would a good answer look like?
  3. Format — In what form? Specify length, tone, a list, a table, a WhatsApp message…

A complete example

CONTEXT: I am a communications officer at a health NGO in Kinshasa. We are launching a vaccination campaign in three districts. GOAL: I want to announce it clearly and reassuringly to residents. FORMAT: Write three versions of a WhatsApp message, each no longer than 60 words: one in plain English, one warmer in tone and one very short status update. No medical jargon.

Small additions that help

  • Assign a role : “Act as an experienced sales trainer…”
  • Provide an example of the style you like, so AI has something to follow.
  • Set boundaries : word count, audience and what to avoid.
  • Ask it to question you : “Before answering, ask any questions you need.”

A template to keep handy

I am [role], working on [situation]. I need [desired outcome] for [audience]. Reply as a [format], in [length], with a [tone] tone. Avoid [what you do not want].

Mobile data tip: draft your prompt offline in your notes app, then paste it in one go. It saves time and data.

Today's challenge

Choose a task you need to do today — a message, meeting summary or post. Write a request using Context → Goal → Format and send it to your chosen assistant.
