AI as a colleague, beyond one-off answers

The first response is a draft. Learn to refine it, ask for criticism and stay in control.

Goal

Build a habit of continuing the conversation to improve the result.

Getting value from AI rarely depends on writing a perfect first prompt. It helps to keep the conversation going.

The first answer is a draft

Treat it like a first draft from a capable new colleague who does not yet know your organisation. Explain what needs to change.

  • “This is too long. Keep the essentials in five lines.”
  • “The tone is too formal; we are speaking to students.”
  • “Point three does not work here: we use Mobile Money. Suggest another approach.”

Ask it to challenge you

Assistants can be overly agreeable. Explicitly ask for critical feedback:

Here is my project: [describe it]. Play a sceptical investor. Give the five most serious objections, ranked from most to least significant, then one question I should answer before going further.

You remain the author

AI suggests; you decide. You know your context, clients and culture. Review, adapt and add local examples. When you sign AI-assisted work, you take responsibility for it.

Ask yourself: what could I do better with AI?

Today's challenge

Take an AI response you found mediocre. Use at least three follow-up exchanges to improve it: shorten it, change the tone and add a local example.
